Governance:

At the meeting of the QWA Management Committee on 27/9/2023 the resignation lodged by Ordinary member of the MC Mike Keelan was accepted.

The QWA President, MC members and office wish to formally thank Mike for his valuable contributions to the development of all matters related to weightlifting here in Queensland. His most recent period on the MC rounds out 40 years of service in the development and continued growth of the sport here in Queensland. We wish him all the best with his future.

The QWA constitution provides the current MC with the capacity to appoint a suitably qualified QWA member to this position without any need for consultation with the membership, however, in line with meeting our values of good governance we have elected to notify the membership that we are seeking EOI’s from members to fill this position.

Whilst any member may lodge an EOI the QWA MC has identified a particular skill set that would best assist the sports growth.

We are seeking as a priority an individual who has demonstrable skills in the area of Marketing.

EOI’s are now sought from the QWA Membership to fill this vacant position on the QWA Management Committee. Members considering applying need to bear in mind that they will have to commit to attending a minimum of seven (7) meetings/workshops per year which may take place at weekends, weeknights, or weekdays; and that this is a volunteer position, not paid.  Nominees are also strongly advised to familiarise themselves with the Sports Governance Principles published on the Sport Australia website: https://www.sportaus.gov.au/governance

Please lodge your EOI by submitting your CV – Include any present position in sport/business, previous positions in sport/business, professional activities, volunteer activities; and the skills, qualifications, experience and attributes you will bring to the MC, via email to qwa@qwa.org no later than midnight on Wednesday 11th October 2023.

Please contact the office if you require further information.

Athlete Development:

Plans are well under way now as the QWA works on the management of its 32 State team member athletes at the upcoming National U15/Youth Championships in Perth. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their commitment to the sport and recognise the significant expenses they will incur. We wish them all the best with their remaining preparations and hope that they are able to attend Squad training at Cougars on the 21st October. Gooo Queensland!!

Entries for the State Masters Championships in Miles in December continue to flow in. The QWA is pleased to be able to advise that a Masters training session as a last hit out before the event will be held at Milton Weightlifting Club, Bowen Hills on Sunday 19th November 9.30-12.30pm.

Club Development:

Dux Weightlifting Club at Kelvin Grove held its first official competition last weekend. Of the 12 entrants only 1 of them wasn’t from Dux – Bobby Johnson from Southside Storm accompanied by his coach John Hanlon. Rhian Roussos head coach at Dux was kept extremely busy in the warm-up area. There were a fantastically enthusiastic spectator cohort in attendance, ensuring good vibes all round. It was fantastic to see some previous members of Ironskull get back on the competition platform. The competition results can be found here: https://www.awf.com.au/competition/statistics/competitions/results/id/2918 A big thank you to the team of senior TO’s in attendance: Lesley Moyle, Alex Croot & Julie Davis – all Category 1 International referees, along with Tandia Wood – Club level – now back in Brisbane continuing her studies.

Following on from attendance and learnings at the QWA Club Development Workshop in June, Fraser Coast Weightlifting Club became Incorporated this week. Great work team on getting this done. They will now be eligible to apply for grants from local and state government.
