Vale Neil Thomson 1949 – 2023

It is with sadness that the QWA records the passing of Neil Thomson.

Neil was very involved in the development of the QWA in the early 80’s, holding a position on the Management Committee that was successful in employing the first ever employee of the QWA – Development Officer Mike Keelan.

Neil continued to attend numerous events as a staunch supporter of the sport. In recent times he organised for Olympian Peter Phillips (1972) to attend the 2022 State Senior Championships at Cougars, along with Trevor Walz and Neil Sivyer.

I am going to miss his regular phone calls congratulating the QWA on its membership and competition entry numbers. ❤️

NSW Coaching Conference

The QWA was very excited to receive news of the NSWWA Coaching Conference to be held in January 2024 in Sydney. Several key-note speakers from overseas and domestically are booked to present over the 3 days of the conference. Including but not limited to:

IWF Hall of Fame member Prof Kyle Pierce (USA flag); Olympic Gold Medal Coach Julius Naranjo (Philippines Flag) Commonwealth Games medal winning and Olympic coach Tina Ball (NZ Flag)

A fantastic initiative!

With successful funding from the Queensland Government, we have been able to send out invitations to Queensland’s up-and-coming accredited coaches offering to cover their conference fees. Attendees will however need to cover the cost of their own travel and accommodation costs.

Compliance

As we approach the last sanctioned competition of the weightlifting year please remember to send your competition schedules in to SIA before your upcoming events.

State qualifying standards for 2024

QWA strategic priorities are focused on inspiring active participation and competitive success, as well as inclusive involvement throughout the state. In line with this objective the QWA MC have maintained the same standard of qualification for State events going into 2024. This will be reviewed late in 2024 in preparation for the 2025 competition year.
