The AWF received the sad news of the recent passing of three long-standing members and contributors to the sport of weightlifting.

Alfred (Alf) Lacey passed on 11 May 2025.

Alf was an active Coach in Goulburn NSW and a former Board Member and Vice President of the NSW Weightlifting Association.

Boris Kayser passed on 17 May 2025.

Boris served many terms on the Australian Weightlifting Federation Board of Directors over four decades. He was an IWF Category 1 Referee and he officiated at many International Championships and National events.

Anthony (Tony) Villanti passed on 18 May 2025.

Tony was an active Technical Official and a tireless volunteer for the Victorian Weightlifting Association and the Hawthorn Weightlifting Club. Tony was a former Board Member of the VWA and the Hawthorn Citizen’s Youth Club.

QWA Masters News

With the change in date for the National Masters from early this year to now October we have a lengthy lag time following our State Championships. Additionally, there is a further 3 months of qualifying allowed by the AWF to the 1 August 2025 to be eligible to enter.

At the most recent QWA Management Committee meeting the following was approved.

All QWA Masters lifters are to be afforded the opportunity to enter and compete at the National Championships in Canberra in October.

  • Where that member had not competed at the State Championships in Miles or applied for and was approved an exemption they would be eligible to compete at Nationals once fulfilling the following criteria:
  • Members who have not met the above requirements will be required to pay a $75 levy to the QWA for the purposes of endorsing their entry with the AWF and funds will go towards assisting with the expenses of team personnel travelling with the team. this fee is in addition to the competition entry fees required to be paid to register for the National event.
  • That they have met the requirement of competing in a qualifying event in the period 4th May 2024-23 February 2025 as set down by the AWF.
