QWA Annual Awards Selection Criteria

 OBJECTIVES

The progress and achievements of a sporting association such as the QWA depends on the efforts and dedication of a large number of people. These include the Association’s professional staff, coaches, officials, Association and Club office bearers and, the athletes themselves. While the personal satisfaction they receive from knowing that they have contributed is often all that the individuals concerned seek, rewards in the form of the Association’s acclamation are nevertheless appropriate and the attention they receive assists in the provision of role models and goals for other members.

The purpose of the QWA’s annual awards is, therefore, twofold:

1. To recognise and reward outstanding contribution and achievement; and

2. To provide role models for other QWA members to emulate.

 

AWARD CATEGORIES

Categories for the awards are as follows:

  1. Best senior male lifter;
  2. Best senior female lifter;
  3. Best junior male lifter;
  4. Best junior female lifter;
  5. Best Under 17 male lifter;
  6. Best Under 17 female lifter;
  7. Best Under 14 male lifter;
  8. Best Under 14 female lifter;
  9. Best masters lifter;
  10. Rookie of the year;
  11. Most improved male lifter;
  12. Most improved female lifter;
  13. Best club coach;
  14. Novice coach of the year;
  15. Officiator of the year;
  16. Best club;
  17. Continuous Club Improvement;
  18. Life Membership award;
  19. Distinguished Service award;
  20. Volunteer of the year;
  21. Contributor to development of
  22. special interest groups;
  23. QWA Office Bearer;
  24. Special Recognition award;
  25. The QWA achiever of the year.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

1 - 8 Best lifter awards
(Senior, Junior, U17, U14)

Awards in each category are to be made according to the Queensland Sinclair Rankings for the award year as at the closing date for nominations.

 

9. Best Masters lifter award

Lifters in the Masters category are to be judged by the QWA Masters Coordinator on the basis of the following criteria:

a. Performance at State, National and International competitions;

b. Records at State, National and International levels;

c. Improvement and/or consistency in level of performance;

d. Dedication to the sport and its progress in Queensland, as demonstrated in such aspects of performance as:

· support provided to team mates at competitions

· encouragement and mentoring of other lifters

· contribution to QWA activities and events

The weight given to the various criteria are at the discretion of the selector.

 

10. Rookie of the year

The novice lifter who, in the opinion of the QWA Selection Committee, has demonstrated the most impressive improvement in their performance on the platform in their first year. In the consideration of potential recipients, the committee may also take into account such considerations as:

a. Commitment to training;

b. Demonstration of good technique; and

c. Team spirit and contribution to club/QWA activities.

11 - 12. Most Improved lifter awards

These awards will be presented to the most improved male lifter and most improved female lifter in the award year as determined by the Forbes improvement formula.

13. Best club coach

To be selected by the QWA Selection Committee from nominations received. The following criteria will apply:

a. Number of lifters maintained in regular competition;

b. Performance of lifters in terms of both results achieved and technique;

c. Innovation and technical merit of coaching methods;

d. Assistance provided to other coaches; and

e. Contribution to the QWA’s efforts to improve the standard of lifting and coaching in the state.

The weight place on the various criteria will be at the discretion of the Awards Committee.

 

14. Best novice coach

To be selected by the QWA Selection Committee from nominations received. This award is reserved for new coaches in their first two years of coaching. The following criteria will apply:

a. Performance of lifters in terms of both results achieved and technique;

b. Innovation and technical merit of coaching methods; and

c. Involvement in QWA coaching programs and performance in these programs.

Weighting at the discretion of the Awards Committee.

15. QWA officiator of the year

This award is for the official who, in the opinion of the QWA Management Committee, has made the most significant contribution to the provision and advancement of weightlifting officiating in the state through his/her activities. Nominations will be judged on the basis of the following criteria:

a. Activity at State, National and International events;

b. Contribution to the education of officials;

c. Technical merit, professionalism and consistency of performance in officiating.

16. Best club

Nominations for the best club award will be considered by the QWA Management Committee in terms of the following criteria:

a. Membership and growth in membership achieved in the year;

b. Performance of lifters in state and national competition;

c. Design and implementation of programs aimed at recruiting new lifters and/or enhancing the awareness and image of weightlifting in the community;

d. Contribution to, and professionalism in, the organisation of events;

e. Effectiveness in fundraising and acquisition of equipment;

f. Efficiency and effectiveness of administration; and

g. Contribution to, and support of, QWA activities.

h. The weighting assigned to items ‘b’ to ‘g’ will be at the discretion of the Committee.

17. Club Continuous Improvement Award

This award will be made to the QWA affiliated club that, in the opinion of the QWA Management Committee, has achieved the most improvement over the course of the year in the following areas:

a. Leadership;

b. Administration;

c. Client focus;

d. Planning;

e. Human resource management;

f. Service quality;

18 - 19. Life Membership Award and Distinguished Service Award

These awards are presented to any members upon whom they have been bestowed by the vote of all members at the QWA Annual General Meeting.

20. Volunteer of the year

This award is for the individual member of the QWA who has made an outstanding contribution through such activities as:

a. Fundraising, sponsorship and associated activities;

b. Public relations and publicity;

c. Organisation and running of events;

d. Recruitment and development (of lifters, office bearers, etc.)

e. First aid and safety; and

f. Improvement of facilities and equipment

21. Contributor to development of special interest groups

To be awarded to the member of the QWA who has contributed most to the advancement in weightlifting for any of the following specific (potentially disadvantaged) groups:

a. Women;

b. Disabled people;

c. Aborigines;

d. Disadvantaged ethnic minorities;

e. People in geographically isolated areas; and

f. Other socio-economically disadvantaged groups.

This contribution may be in the form of such activities as:

a. Recruitment and coaching;

b. Provision of a role model;

c. Administration; and

d. Organisation of special events.

 

22. QWA Office Bearer

This award is for the office bearer of the QWA who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has made the most significant contribution to the advancement of weightlifting in Queensland through the service provided by them in their official capacity as a QWA office bearer.

 

23. Special Recognition Award

This award may be made at the discretion of the QWA Management Committee where it is considered that a person has made an outstanding contribution to the QWA in a specialist area not covered by other award categories.

 

24. The QWA Achiever Of The Year

The QWA Achiever of the Year is reserved for the person whose achievements and/or contribution warrant special recognition in the opinion of the QWA Management Committee. This person may be an outstanding recipient of one of the above awards and/or they may be someone who has made a consistent contribution over a number of years.

 

ELIGIBILITY OF PAID STAFF OF THE QWA

Professional staff of the QWA will be eligible to receive awards only in areas which are not directly associated with their responsibilities, as described in their duty statement, or where their contribution in associated areas is considered by the QWA Management Committee to be significantly over and above that which is required of their office.

 

PROCEDURES

The field of candidates for all non-lifter awards (ie. categories 13 - 24) will be based on the assessment by the appointed selectors of nominations received. To be considered, nominations must satisfy the following requirements:

a. Nominations must be made in writing, signed by the proposer, and received no later than the advertised due date; and

b. Submissions must specifically address each of the criteria for the category in question.
