Most sports recognise the need to provide quality service to those athletes who have advanced in age beyond their physical peak yet still want to enjoy the activities that they love, and weightlifting is no exception.

The QWA provides opportunities for mature weightlifters, and for those making a "late" start in the sport, to enjoy the many physical, emotional and social benefits of participating in weightlifting competitions through our "Masters" program.

In weightlifting, Masters are women over 30 years old and men over 35 who compete within age groups in State, National and International events.

Masters weightlifting in Queensland received a real shot in the arm in 1994 when the QWA hosted the weightlifting tournament of the World Masters Games in Brisbane. This event provided the catalyst for many local Masters weightlifters to dust off their boots and get back onto the competition platform.

The legacy of the 1994 World Masters Games was an ever-increasing number of weightlifters hungry for more events catering for Masters. To feed this hunger the QWA’s Masters Coordinator, Barry Harden, established a program of regular competitions specifically for Masters weightlifters which continues to grow in popularity and stature. These events are conducted throughout the year with emphasis placed on participation and consistency of effort, leading to an enjoyable and challenging experience for all involved.
