League 97
By Ian Moir
When was the last time a weightlifter in Queensland, or for that matter Australia, competed against ten or more opponents who all provided stiff competition? When was the last time a weightlifting competition was held in Queensland where the placings in most divisions were not a foregone conclusion? Answer: February 8th, 1997. On this date the first round of the QWAs League 97 took place.
Based on the format of the Healthequip Queensland 1000, this League provides the opportunity for all lifters, coaches, officials and spectators to enjoy the excitement of truly competitive sport.
The object of the QWAs League 97 is simple: to provide a style of competition in which weightlifters can compete against others with similar levels of ability for lucrative rewards and to foster a competition environment where personal best performances are valued as the highest achievement.
Below are the rules and regulations under which the League will operate in 1997. The course of the competition in all events associated with the League, of course, must be in accordance with the rules of the Australian Weightlifting Federation.
Classification of Competitors
The League contains four levels or divisions of competition. Athletes are classified according to their best official competition total since January 1st, 1996 expressed as a percentage of the relevant World Record (WR) as at January 1st, 1997. The following classification standards apply:
Division 1 >= 60% of WR
Division 2 <60% >=50% of WR
Division 3 <50% >=40% of WR
Division 4 <40% of WR
Athletes compete within the division in which they are classified at the commencement of the League for the duration of 1997 regardless of any change in their level of performance during the year. Individuals who have not previously recorded an official competition total are classified in Division 4.
Competition Format
The League consists of four competition rounds and one Final. Participation in the competition rounds is open to all members of the QWA. The placings in each division in each round are decided by the point scores achieved in the round. Participation in the Final is confined to the ten (10) highest point scorers in Division 1 and the five (5) highest point scorers in each of Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4, based upon the individuals aggregate score from no more than three of the four competition rounds.
Example
| Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Round 4 | Best 3 Scores |
| 43 points | 51 points | 48 points | 60 points | 60+51+48=159 points |
Regional Participation
QWA members who reside in the Central and Northern Regions may participate either in the scheduled competition rounds conducted in the Southern Division or an official weightlifting competition sanctioned by their relevant Regional Council and conducted within their own Region. These competitions must take place within ten days prior to the scheduled round (QWA calendar). The results, accompanied by the appropriate competition entry fees, must be received by the QWA Executive Director before the commencement of the scheduled round.
Results achieved by Queensland athletes competing in National or International events which take place within seven days prior to or after the scheduled round will also be accepted.
Scoring
League 97 scores will be calculated in the following manner:
Percentage of World Record
The competitors final total is calculated as a percentage of the relevant World Record Total.
The final total divided by the World Record x 100 = Percentage Points.
Personal Best Bonus
Points will be awarded for equalling or exceeding current Personal Best results according to the following scale:
Heaviest Snatch equalling Personal Best 1 Point
Heaviest Snatch exceeding Personal Best 5 Points
Heaviest Clean & Jerk equalling Personal Best 1 Point
Heaviest Clean & Jerk exceeding Personal Best 5 Points
Final Total equalling Personal Best 1 Point
Final Total exceeding Personal Best 5 Points
Six out of Six Bonus
Six (6) points will be awarded for all six attempts being successfully completed.
Penalty Points
The following Penalty Points will accrue for performances below Personal Best:
Heaviest Snatch more than 5kg below Personal Best -3 Points
Heaviest Snatch more than 10kg below Personal Best -5 Points
Heaviest Clean & Jerk more than 5kg below Personal Best -3 Points
Heaviest Clean & Jerk more than 10kg below Personal Best -5 Points
Final Total more than 5kg below Personal Best -3 Points
Final Total more than 10kg below Personal Best -5 Points
Calculating the Final Score
Percentage of World Record + Bonus Points* + Penalty Points = Final Score
*Maximum Bonus Points possible: PB snatch + PB clean & jerk + PB total + 6 out of 6 = 21
Personal Best
For the purposes of League 97, the initial Personal Best results for Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total are those achieved in any official weightlifting competition held between January 1st, 1996 and Round 1 of League 97. After Round 1 of League 97, the Personal Best results used to calculate competitors scores will be those achieved in any official weightlifting competition held during 1996 and any official weightlifting competition, excluding National and International events, held in 1997.
In the event of an entrants Personal Best Snatch or Clean & Jerk not being a multiple of 2.5, e.g. record of 102kg, the actual weight will be rounded down to the nearest weight which is a multiple of 2.5. The adjusted weight which is a multiple of 2.5 will be regarded as the entrants Personal Best. A new Personal Best result must exceed the previous Personal Best by a minimum of 2.5kg.
An entrant who has not recorded a result in an official weightlifting competition held after January 1st, 1996 and therefore has no current Personal Bests, will not receive Bonus Points or Penalty Points.
