1st Masters World Cup – Penang, Malaysia – November 2013
The first ever Masters World Cup for weightlifting was held at Penang, in conjunction with the 2013 Commonwealth Championships.  And again, there were plenty of Queenslanders involved.  The Sinclair and Malone-Meltzer formula was used to rank all competitors across the various age and weight categories.  In the women’s competition, Queenslanders Diana Loy and Coral Quinell got amongst the prizes, achieving 2nd place and 4th place respectively.

QWA League & Masters League 2014
The popular QWA League will be back again next year, with some small changes that will hopefully make the competition rounds more manageable by spreading the field more evenly over two days.

There will still be 4 Divisions, but the grading bands have changed to achieve a more even distribution of Queensland’s weightlifting population across the Divisions.  New lifters, i.e. lifters who get their first competition total in 2014, will be classified by that total, whereas in the past all new lifters remained in Division 4 for the whole year.

The 2014 League Classification will be posted on the QWA website in January.

Round 1 of the QWA League & Masters League will be held at the Cougars Weightlifting Club, Chandler, on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th February.

JME Queensland Club Challenge
The JME Queensland Club Challenge will also be back in 2014, thanks to the generous sponsorship of  JME Weightlifting & Fitness Equipment . With many new weightlifting clubs signed up already, next year’s ‘JME’ will be bigger than ever.

To help new clubs get ready for the 2014 season, the QWA has delivered many Club Referee courses during the past few months. Most recently, courses were held at Alive Barbell Club, Oxenford; and St Andrew’s Weightlifting Club, Miles, in December.  Early in the New Year, we will be heading to North Queensland to provide Referee training for the QWA members up that way.

2014 National Clubs Tournament
The QWA is hosting the AWF National Clubs Tournament at Chandler, Brisbane, on 3rd – 6th April next year.  This event will be a great opportunity for all lifters to represent their Club in a National competition.  More information and entry forms will be available soon.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
2014 is another ‘Games Year’ and the AWF recently released an updated list of lifters who have qualified for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Shadow Team.  Queenslanders currently make up one third of the Shadow Team, with thirteen members included.

From the Shadow Team, eight men and seven women will be selected for nomination to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the announcement of those nominations will take place at the Gold Coast on 15th March when the final Commonwealth Games Team Nomination Trials are held at the Mercure Hotel, Palm Meadows.

Queensland Government Funding
The QWA’s application to the Queensland Government for funding under the Queensland Sport & Recreation Industry Development Program (QSRIDP) 2014 – 2016 resulted in an allocation of $89,800 per year for the next three years.  This amount of funding is similar to that received by the QWA in previous years, reflecting the Government’s satisfaction with the QWA’s performance as an organisation; and confidence in our ability to provide opportunities for more Queenslanders to participate in weightlifting.

Merry Christmas to All
With the festive season now upon us, we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.  2013 has been a big year for weightlifting in Queensland and 2014 is looking every bit as exciting.  The QWA staff will be taking a few weeks leave at this time, to recharge and re-energize in readiness for the year ahead.

The QWA office will be closed from Friday 20th December to Monday 13th January 2014.

The Queensland Government provides funding for the Queensland Weightlifting Association to get more Queenslanders active through sport and recreation.
