Queensland Youth & Under 15 Championships

An enthusiastic crowd was treated to a host of fine performances at the 2013 Queensland Youth & Under 15 Championships, held in Toowoomba last weekend.  Twenty-two of the thirty young competitors achieved new Personal Best results; and nineteen State Records, plus three National Records, were broken.

The day commenced with the first of the men’s groups.  In the 50kg category, Brisbane Grammar School’s Fraser Jeavons won the Youth Championship by a comfortable margin, while Dillon Fisler, from Mackay, performed consistently well in the Snatch and bounced back from a failed second attempt at Clean & Jerk to succeed with two kilos more on his third, winning the Under 15 title.

Harrison Gaffney (Cougars Weightlifting Club) added 12 kilos to his previous best Total to win the 56kg bodyweight category in both age groups and set a Sinclair score that earned him the title of Best U15 Male.  The 62kg category Youth Championship was dominated by Australian Rep and Cougars Club lifter Joshua Wu.  Ironskull’s Alex Bax posted a big improvement to secure the gold medal in the Under 15 division of the 62kg category.

Next up were the women’s categories.  In the 48kg category, Australian Youth Representative Robin Parr broke State and National Records while securing the Youth Championship and Best U17 Female award; while 10 year old Alana Evans, also from the Cougars Club, demonstrated good technique, succeeding with 5 out of 6 attempts for the Under 15 title.

The 53kg Category was a contest between the “Maddy’s”.  Madeline Wu (Cougars) achieved new Qld Under 15 Records in the Clean & Jerk and Total on her way to defeating Madalene Derksen (Sunshine Coast) in both age divisions.  Madeline Wu was also the Best U15 Female Lifter on the day.

The Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club reigned supreme in the 58kg category, with Hayely Ward and Shaylea Eaton comfortably winning the Youth and Under 15 divisions, respectively.  And in the +69kg category, Deanne Elliott (CrossFit Northside) broke Queensland Under 15 Records in Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total.

In the final session of the day, James Norman (Cougars) set an Australian Youth Record in the Clean & Jerk, won the 69kg category Youth Championship and edged out Joshua Wu to take the Best Lifter award in the Men’s Youth division.  Joshua Mak (Cougars) improved on his previous best total and won the Under 15 Championship in this category.

James Pollicina, from St Laurence’s College, won both the Youth and Under 15 divisions of the 77kg category, setting new Personal Bests in Snatch and Total.  While in the 85kg category, Australian Youth Representative Shane Wagner (Toowoomba), nursing a sore wrist, took only one snatch attempt and one clean & jerk, yet still secured first place.

Tom Beikoff (St Laurence’s College) added 11kg to his previous best Total and won the 94kg category Youth Championship.  Toowoomba lifter Aden Creed also achieved new PB’s while winning the 94kg Under 15 title.  Both Tom and Aden set new Queensland Records for this category.

Another big improver from Ironskull, Brandon Pritchard, took out the +94kg Youth title; while Jordan Evans (Cougars) was the Under 15 Champion in this category.
