2013 Oceania and Australian and South Pacific Weightlifting Championships

Thrilling, entertaining, satisfying, exhausting… the 2013 Oceania Senior, Junior & Youth Championships and 2013 Australian Senior & Junior Championships and South Pacific Senior, Junior & Youth Championships was all of these things.

As weightlifting teams from across the Oceania region and from around Australia began to arrive in Brisbane last week, a small band of QWA members were busily preparing for the task ahead.

With the help of Ian Moir, Mike Keelan, Craig Wegert, Kylie Booth, Damon Kelly, Luke Gardner, Rob Galsworthy, Melissa Robinson, Tony Ropati and Bonnie Sleeman, the Chandler Theatre was transformed into a weightlifting competition venue befitting this prestigious event.

Thursday morning saw the first of the athletes alight the competition platform as Session 1 of 22 began.  With so many competitors in one or more of the eight competitions taking place in this combined event, many of the men’s categories were split into A and B Groups; and some even had C Groups.

By the end of the last session on Sunday evening, the men’s +105kg category A Group, 246 lifters had performed to an estimated audience of 4,500 in the Chandler Theatre; almost 3,500 people in 68 countries had tuned in to the live webcast produced by Bowen Stuart; and the Championships had been visited by many special guests including:

Mr Steve Davies MP, Member for Capalaba, representing the Hon Steve Dickson MP, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing;
