Queensland Weightlifting members featured prominently at the 6th Australian Youth Olympic Festival, held in Sydney this month. In the weightlifting competition, Australia was represented by sixteen athletes, including six Queenslanders.
Queensland coaches Greg Hobl, Angela Wydall and Miles Wydall were appointed to coach the Australian Team, along with two other coaches, from Tasmania and Western Australia.
In the men’s 62kg category, Joshua Wu held off a strong challenge from fellow Queenslander James Norman to claim the Bronze medal behind China’s Chen Meilong (Gold) and Elson Brechtefield (Silver) from Nauru.
Other Qld athletes’ results were: James Norman 4th in the 62kg category; Jakob Daniels 4th in the 77kg category; Jon Pakchung 7th in the 85kg category; Hayley Ward 5th in the 53kg category; and Deanna Bax 6th in the 69kg category.
Eight Queensland Technical Officials were appointed for the three-day event, taking on various roles as Jury members, Referees, Technical Controllers, Timekeepers, Marshals and Competition Secretary. And dual Olympian and QWA Development Officer Damon Kelly was in attendance as the AYOF Ambassador for Weightlifting.
